Switzerland Endorses Nigeria’s Bid for IMO Council Seat
Nigeria’s campaign for a seat on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council has received a major boost following Switzerland’s formal endorsement of the country’s bid for the Category ‘C’ seat for the 2026/2027 biennium.
The endorsement was presented on Thursday in Abuja when the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, received a letter of support from Switzerland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Patrick Felix Egloff, during a courtesy visit.
The IMO Council elections are scheduled to hold in October/November 2025.
Describing the endorsement as a “significant step forward,” Minister Oyetola noted that Switzerland’s support reflects Nigeria’s growing reputation and influence in global maritime affairs.
He further emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to strengthening international maritime cooperation, enhancing safety, and promoting sustainable use of marine resources.
With this endorsement, Nigeria’s quest for a place on the IMO Council gains stronger international backing ahead of the upcoming elections.
