Cooking Gas Price Defies Marketers’ Control, Hits ₦1,200 Per Kilogram Across Nigeria
The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has surged to ₦1,200 per kilogram across major cities in Nigeria, defying efforts by marketers to stabilise the market. The increase, which began in late October, has been attributed to the rising cost of importation, foreign exchange volatility, and limited local production.
Consumers in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt lamented that the price hike has forced many households to reduce their gas usage or revert to alternative cooking methods like charcoal and kerosene. The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) expressed concern that the high cost is unsustainable and urged the Federal Government to intervene by improving local production and stabilising the naira-dollar exchange rate.
Industry experts also warned that unless domestic gas supply improves and forex challenges are addressed, prices could climb further before the year ends. The development poses fresh economic pressure on Nigerian families already burdened by inflation and high living costs.
