WAEC Denies Receiving Order to Suspend Planned Computer-Based WASSCE
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has clarified that it has not received any official directive from the National Assembly to suspend its planned migration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) from the traditional paper-and-pencil format to Computer-Based Examinations (CBE).
Speaking to journalists over the weekend after the 63rd Nigeria National Committee (NNC) meeting held in Umuahia, Abia State, the Head of the Nigeria National Office (HNO), Dr. Amos Dangut, dismissed widespread reports claiming that the House of Representatives had ordered WAEC to halt the initiative.
Dr. Dangut reaffirmed that the councilâs phased transition to computer-based testing remains on track, with pilot testing scheduled to begin in 2026. He emphasized that the move is part of WAECâs long-term strategy to modernize its examination processes and align with global best practices.
According to him, WAEC cannot suspend a project of such magnitude based on media reports or unofficial statements. He noted that any directive from the National Assembly would be formally communicated through the appropriate channels.
The proposed shift to CBE has generated nationwide debate, with stakeholders expressing mixed reactions. While some believe the transition will improve efficiency and reduce examination malpractice, others have raised concerns over infrastructure gaps, especially in rural areas.
WAEC, however, assured candidates, parents, and schools that the transition would be gradual, transparent, and inclusive, adding that adequate preparations will be made to ensure fairness and accessibility for all students.
Nigeria TV Info will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on the planned migration to computer-based examinations.
