Peru Moves to Declare Border Emergency as Migrants Gather After Chile Deportation Warning
Peru is preparing to declare a state of emergency along its southern border with Chile as growing numbers of migrants attempt to enter the country, following a controversial deportation vow by a leading Chilean presidential candidate.
President JosĂ© JerĂ announced the decision on Friday via X, stating that the emergency measure âwill generate tranquility before the risk of migrants entering without authorization.â The declaration is expected to tighten security and enhance monitoring at critical border points.
According to Peruvian police General Arturo Valverde, at least 100 migrants â mostly Venezuelans â have gathered at the border, seeking entry into Peru. He told local broadcaster Canal N that security personnel had already intensified surveillance in anticipation of the official emergency order.
The tension stems from remarks made by JosĂ© Antonio Kast, the far-right frontrunner ahead of Chileâs presidential runoff scheduled for next month. Kast warned that undocumented migrants would be expelled from Chile in the coming months if he emerges victorious against leftist candidate Jeannette Jara.
The warning has triggered fear among migrants and prompted movement toward neighboring countries, including Peru, which is now bracing for a possible influx as the political situation in Chile heats up.
