NEITI Tasks CSOs on Tracking Energy Transition Commitments
ABUJA — The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has called on civil society organisations (CSOs) to intensify efforts in monitoring and tracking the commitments of both government and private companies towards the country’s energy transition goals.
According to NEITI, the active involvement of CSOs is crucial to ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective implementation of Nigeria’s commitments to cleaner and sustainable energy sources.
The agency emphasised that as the world moves toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels, Nigeria must not only make bold pledges but also demonstrate measurable progress. It noted that CSOs, being closer to grassroots communities and stakeholders, are strategically positioned to provide independent oversight.
NEITI further urged CSOs to engage constructively with policymakers and industry players, stressing that their watchdog role would help bridge information gaps, promote inclusiveness, and ensure that no community is left behind in the energy transition process.
The call comes at a time when Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, is grappling with balancing economic dependence on hydrocarbons with the global push for renewable energy adoption.
