Insecurity: Again, NEC Shuns Deliberations on State Police

The rising insecurity across the country has continued to dominate public discourse, yet the National Economic Council (NEC) has once again avoided substantive discussions on the creation of state police.

At its latest meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the council focused largely on economic reforms, fiscal policies, and emergency interventions, sidestepping the contentious debate on decentralizing policing.

Despite mounting pressure from governors, civil society groups, and security experts, NEC deferred the matter, citing the need for further consultations. Some governors privately expressed frustration, noting that current security challenges demand urgent structural reforms.

The issue of state police has long divided the political class: proponents argue it would empower states to tackle insecurity more effectively, while critics fear it could be abused by governors for political repression.

With kidnappings, banditry, and violent crimes worsening in several regions, many Nigerians worry that further delays may deepen the security crisis. The decision to sideline the discussion is likely to reignite calls for urgent constitutional amendments and a national referendum on the matter.
