Peru Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Mexico Over Asylum Granted to Former Prime Minister

In a dramatic turn of diplomatic events, Peru has officially severed relations with Mexico following the latter’s decision to grant political asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister, Aníbal Torres. The Peruvian government accused Mexico of “interfering in its internal affairs” and violating diplomatic conventions.

According to Peru’s Foreign Ministry, the Mexican government’s continued support for ex-officials linked to former President Pedro Castillo’s administration constitutes an “unacceptable intrusion” into Peru’s judicial processes. Castillo was ousted in December 2022 after attempting to dissolve Congress, leading to a political crisis that still reverberates in the country.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister defended the asylum offer as a “humanitarian act consistent with international law,” emphasizing that Torres faced “political persecution.” The Mexican embassy in Lima has since suspended operations, while Peru has recalled its ambassador from Mexico City.

Analysts warn the rupture could strain trade and migration cooperation between the two nations, both of which are key members of the Pacific Alliance. The diplomatic fallout marks one of the deepest political rifts in Latin America in recent years.
