US Aggression in Venezuela Sparks Outrage From African Trade Unions

African trade unions across several countries have condemned what they describe as renewed U.S. aggression toward Venezuela, warning that economic sanctions, political pressure and military threats undermine democracy and worsen hardship for ordinary citizens.

In coordinated statements, union federations in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana said workers are bearing the brunt of disrupted trade, rising inflation and fuel instability linked to the crisis. They urged Washington to stop “coercive policies,” calling instead for dialogue, respect for national sovereignty and a UN-led diplomatic process.

Union leaders argued that sanctions deepen poverty, push migration and weaken labor protections at home and abroad. Many also stressed solidarity with Venezuelan workers, noting shared histories of colonial exploitation and economic dependence.

Regional analysts say the unions’ stance reflects growing Global South resistance to unilateral actions by powerful states. They warn that escalating tensions could destabilize markets and strain African economies already battling debt, unemployment and currency volatility.

The unions plan petitions, teach-ins and coordinated demonstrations, while appealing to African governments and the African Union to press for de-escalation and humanitarian relief. “Workers should never be collateral damage in geopolitical battles,” one statement read.
