Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission Flags Surge in Substandard Goods Across Nigerian Markets
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has raised alarm over the increasing circulation of substandard and counterfeit goods in markets across Nigeria, warning that the trend poses serious risks to public health, safety, and the economy.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Commission disclosed that recent surveillance and enforcement operations uncovered a worrying volume of fake and low-quality products, ranging from food items and pharmaceuticals to electronics and household goods. According to the FCCPC, many of these products fail to meet minimum safety and quality standards, exposing consumers to potential harm.
The Commission noted that the proliferation of such goods is being driven by weak supply chain monitoring, porous borders, and the activities of unscrupulous traders seeking quick profits at the expense of consumer welfare. It stressed that the situation undermines fair competition and damages the reputation of legitimate businesses.
FCCPC officials reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying enforcement actions, including market raids, product seizures, and collaboration with other regulatory bodies such as customs and standards organizations. The agency also urged consumers to remain vigilant, verify product authenticity, and report suspicious goods.
Furthermore, the Commission called on manufacturers, importers, and distributors to adhere strictly to regulatory guidelines, warning that violators will face strict penalties under Nigerian law.
As part of its consumer protection mandate, the FCCPC emphasized the importance of public awareness and education in combating the spread of substandard goods, encouraging citizens to play an active role in safeguarding the marketplace.
