Nigeria TV Info — Chelsea Fined £25,000 After Ill-Disciplined Defeat to Manchester United
Chelsea have been fined £25,000 by the Football Association following a string of bookings and a red card during their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend.
The heated encounter started badly for the Blues, as goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off just five minutes into the match. United’s Casemiro also saw red after picking up a second yellow card before half-time, but Chelsea’s ill-discipline overshadowed the contest with six separate bookings.
Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Enzo Fernandez, Tosin Adarabioyo and Tyrique George were all cautioned, alongside Sanchez’s early dismissal. Under FA rules, teams collecting six cards in a single match automatically face a financial penalty.
This is not Chelsea’s first disciplinary setback. The London club were fined three times last season for similar offences, with sanctions ranging from £25,000 to £75,000 after matches against Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle.
So far this season, Chelsea have already amassed 12 yellow cards and one red in just five Premier League games. Only Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Everton and Brighton have more bookings, though none have had a player sent off.
Despite growing criticism, manager Enzo Maresca has downplayed concerns. “It’s something we need to improve but overall, I like the team the way they are fighting,” he said. “There are things we can control and do better, but in terms of team spirit, I’m very happy.”
Chelsea return to Premier League duty against Brighton on Saturday. Sanchez, who served his suspension in the Carabao Cup win over Lincoln City, will be back in contention.
