W’Cup: Nigeria’s Wait Continues as FIFA Delays DR Congo Verdict

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup remain in limbo as world football governing body FIFA has yet to deliver a ruling on the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) protest against DR Congo. The complaint centres on allegations that several Congolese players who took part in the November 2025 African playoff final were ineligible under FIFA’s nationality and eligibility rules — claims rejected by DR Congo officials who insist all players were cleared.

The Super Eagles were eliminated after a dramatic 1–1 draw and 4–3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in Rabat, ending their direct path to the World Cup and handing the Leopards a place in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 26‑31 in Mexico.

Despite circulating rumours, NFF officials have stressed that no formal decision has been communicated by FIFA, and the petition remains under review. NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi have voiced confidence in their case, while National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko said the contest reflects a defence of the rules rather than sour grapes.

DR Congo’s football authorities have firmly dismissed Nigeria’s claims, urging respect for the on‑field result and adherence to FIFA statutes governing sporting nationality. With the intercontinental playoffs approaching, Nigeria’s fate — and a potential second chance at World Cup qualification — hinges on the delayed verdict.
