📺 Nigeria TV Info – The United States government has reiterated its firm stance against birth tourism by Nigerians, warning that visa applications from individuals seeking entry into the U.S. primarily to give birth and secure American citizenship for their children will be denied.
In an official post made via its X (formerly Twitter) handle, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria stressed that the act of travelling to the United States solely for childbirth purposes is not allowed and violates visa regulations.
> "We will deny your visa if we believe your primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to get U.S. citizenship for your child. This is not permitted," the Mission stated clearly.
Consular officers have been instructed to scrutinize applications closely and reject any that show signs of this intent. The practice, widely known as birth tourism, has gained attention for exploiting the U.S. policy of jus soli—citizenship by birth on American soil.
Countries that operate under jus soli grant citizenship automatically to any child born within their territory, regardless of the parents' immigration status. This policy has long made the U.S. an attractive destination for expectant mothers from around the world.
