Rice Price Hike in Nigeria Blamed on Middlemen, Unscrupulous Farmers

LAGOS — Some members of rice farmers’ associations have attributed the persistent rise in rice prices in Nigeria to the activities of unscrupulous farmers and middlemen within the sector.

The leaders of these associations revealed this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday.

Speaking on the issue, the Vice-Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Mr. Sakin Agbayewa, stated that the frequent fluctuations in rice prices are largely driven by human manipulation, despite ongoing government efforts to stabilize the market.

He urged stakeholders in the agricultural value chain to act responsibly to ensure fair pricing and steady supply, noting that unchecked practices could further strain consumers.
