A popular Mexican musician known for singing the praises of drug lords has been shot dead in a parking lot in western Mexico, police confirmed late Tuesday.

Ernesto Barajas, the lead singer of the group Enigma Norteño — which boasts over four million monthly listeners on Spotify — was gunned down in the city of Zapopan, Jalisco State.

Barajas is the latest performer of narcocorridos, a controversial sub-genre of regional Mexican music that glorifies the exploits of notorious drug cartels, to be killed in recent months.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder, which has once again highlighted the dangers faced by musicians associated with the narcocorrido scene.
