The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has slammed a ₦766 million fine on Multichoice Nigeria Limited, operators of popular pay-TV services DStv and GOtv, for breaching national data protection regulations.

The penalty, announced on Monday, follows the outcome of a year-long investigation by the NDPC into alleged violations involving the unauthorized cross-border transfer of users’ personal data and other privacy concerns affecting subscribers across the country.

According to Babatunde Bamigboye, NDPC's Head of Legal, the probe was initiated after multiple complaints pointing to suspected abuse of data privacy rights by the entertainment giant, which is Africa’s largest pay-TV provider.

Multichoice has in recent times faced increasing scrutiny from Nigerian authorities, including regulatory battles over subscription price hikes, as well as disputes surrounding tax obligations. The company was unavailable for immediate comment on the latest sanction.
