As tobacco-related illnesses claim over eight million lives globally each year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and global health advocates are renewing calls for stronger action against the tobacco industry. This comes amid fresh concerns over the industry's evolving tactics aimed at undermining global tobacco control efforts.
The newly released WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2025, alongside key resolutions from the World Conference on Tobacco Control (WCTC) held in Ireland, paints a concerning picture—especially for low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. According to the report, the tobacco and nicotine industries remain major obstacles to life-saving policies and public health gains.
In a joint declaration, WCTC participants urged governments to speed up the enforcement of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and hold the tobacco industry accountable as a central threat to public health advancement.
