Nurses working in federal hospitals across Nigeria have issued a strong warning to the federal government, threatening an indefinite nationwide strike if their demands are not addressed promptly. According to Joe Akpi, Chairperson of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), National Hospital Chapter, the ongoing seven-day warning strike may only be the beginning.
In an interview with Nigeria TV Info on Wednesday, Mr. Akpi explained that although nurses will return to work after the warning strike, negotiations will continue. However, if there is no meaningful resolution, the union will issue a 21-day ultimatum.
“If by the end of that ultimatum the government still fails to act, we will proceed on an indefinite strike, and this time, we will not resume until all our concerns are fully addressed,” he said.
The warning comes amid growing tension in the health sector, as nurses advocate for improved working conditions, better pay, and proper recognition of their professional status.
