China-Nigeria Trade Volume Hits $21.9 Billion Amid Deepening Economic Ties

The trade relationship between China and Nigeria has reached a new milestone, hitting a record $21.9 billion in trade volume for 2025, according to data released by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. The report highlights that Nigeria remains China’s largest trading partner in Africa, accounting for over 10% of its total trade with the continent.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun, disclosed that bilateral trade has seen consistent growth driven by increased exports of machinery, electronics, and manufactured goods from China, as well as imports of crude oil and agricultural products from Nigeria. He emphasized that both nations are working to balance trade by boosting Nigerian exports and promoting industrial partnerships.

Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, described the figures as a positive sign of strengthening cooperation, noting that ongoing infrastructure projects funded by Chinese investments—such as railways, power, and manufacturing—continue to drive mutual benefits.

Experts believe the growing trade volume will enhance Nigeria’s industrial capacity, create jobs, and foster technology transfer. However, they also caution that Nigeria must prioritize local content development and reduce dependence on imports to achieve a sustainable trade balance.
