Supporters of the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, popularly known as the "Obidients," in Abia State have called on former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to drop his rumoured 2027 presidential ambition and support Obi's bid under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The group, in a press statement issued on Saturday, said Obi remains the most credible and widely accepted candidate to challenge for Nigeria’s top office, and urged Atiku to demonstrate statesmanship by backing a united front in the opposition.

According to the spokesperson of the Abia Obidients, Mr. Chinedu Mba, the movement is committed to consolidating the gains of the 2023 election where Obi emerged as a major force. He said the 2027 race offers another opportunity to rally progressive forces around a candidate who reflects the aspirations of Nigerian youths and reform-minded citizens.

"With growing support nationwide and a consistent message of accountability, transparency, and economic revival, Mr. Peter Obi stands as the natural leader of a new Nigeria," Mba stated. "We respectfully call on His Excellency Atiku Abubakar to embrace this moment and endorse Obi, so we can focus on defeating the APC and rescuing Nigeria."

Although Peter Obi is yet to officially declare his 2027 intentions or confirm a move to the ADC, recent political signals suggest ongoing consultations ahead of a possible realignment within the opposition bloc.

Atiku, who has contested for the presidency multiple times, has not publicly responded to the call.

The development comes amid rising political activity across Nigeria as various parties and groups begin early groundwork ahead of the 2027 general elections.
