Manila, Philippines — At least two people have been confirmed dead after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines late Thursday, authorities have reported.

According to Karlo Puerto, an information officer with the Davao Region’s Civil Defence Office, the victims were residents of Mati City in Davao Oriental province, one of the areas located closest to the offshore epicentre.

Preliminary reports indicated damage to homes, buildings, and bridges in several parts of the region. However, officials said the full extent of destruction across affected communities was still being assessed.

The quake, which struck with significant force, is one of the strongest to hit the Philippines in recent years. The Southeast Asian nation lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region highly prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity, recording more than 800 tremors annually.

The incident comes just two weeks after the Philippines suffered its deadliest earthquake in over a decade — a 6.9-magnitude tremor off the central island of Cebu that claimed at least 74 lives.

Authorities have warned residents to remain vigilant as aftershocks are expected to continue in the coming days, with emergency teams actively monitoring the situation and assisting affected families.
