India Faces FIFA Ban Threat for Second Time in Three Years
NEW DELHI — India’s football governing body, the All India Football Federation (AIFF), is once again under threat of a FIFA suspension — the second in three years — after failing to implement a new constitution demanded by the sport’s global and continental authorities.
World governing body FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have jointly issued a stern warning, setting an October 30 deadline for compliance. In a joint letter addressed to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, both bodies expressed “profound concern” over the continued delay in finalising and adopting the federation’s constitution.
The dispute centers on governance reforms that FIFA and the AFC insist are necessary for ensuring transparency, accountability, and independence in Indian football administration. Non-compliance could lead to suspension, barring Indian national teams and clubs from international competitions, while also halting developmental support from FIFA.
This is not the first time India has faced such a crisis. In August 2022, FIFA briefly suspended the AIFF for “undue influence from third parties,” a move that sparked global concern before the suspension was lifted following swift government intervention.
As the October deadline looms, the pressure is mounting on AIFF to act swiftly or risk plunging Indian football into another phase of uncertainty.
