AFN Unveils 15-Athlete Squad for World Athletics Championships in Tokyo
Abuja – The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released the official list of 15 athletes that will represent the country at the forthcoming 20th World Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21, 2025, at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.
The Nigerian contingent, comprising seven female and eight male athletes, is set to compete in 11 track and field events. According to the AFN, the selection reflects a blend of experience and emerging talent, aimed at boosting Nigeria’s medal chances on the global stage.
The events include:
Men’s categories: 100m, 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, long jump, and shot put.
Women’s categories: 100m, 100m hurdles, long jump, discus, and hammer throw.
AFN officials expressed optimism that Team Nigeria will deliver strong performances in Tokyo, emphasizing that the athletes are currently undergoing intensive training and international preparations.
The World Athletics Championships is regarded as one of the biggest sporting events after the Olympics, attracting elite athletes from across the globe.
